In this series we’re spotlighting our team of Comalatechies, the developers, leaders and creatives who build our products and make things happen. We sat down to chat with Miguel Angel, software developer and official mountain-climber at our Bilbao office.
What brought you to Comalatech?
The first reason was actually my girlfriend. I’m from Catalunya, born in Barcelona, and moved to Bilbao because my girlfriend is here. I arrived in Bilbao last summer and started looking for a job. I went to other interviews, but I felt something different at Comalatech. It left that good first impression on you. I chose Comalatech as the next phase in my career, and a place I could see myself working at for a long time.
So how do you find living and working in Bilbao?
It’s better than I expected! Bilbao is a city, but not a big city like Barcelona, so almost everything is nearby. You can go to the beach or the mountain. There are a lot of activities – theatres, music, old art. In Catalunya there are a lot of good people, of course, but I think the Basque people are very kind. There’s something great about all places, but here they’re very kind.
You used to be in IT, correct? Was it a big jump moving into software development?
I was working as a system administrator for a small company. It was fine, and they paid me well. But in the last three years I felt a little stuck and I needed a change. Since I was moving anyways, I decided to change my career. I had done a bit of web design in Joomla, so I had some experience with programming. But it’s very different from IT – in IT you have a lot of problems that you don’t understand. A computer is broken, you turn it off and on, and suddenly it’s fixed. But with development you can see the problem, understand it and fix it. In IT there’s a lot that you don’t have control over, so I prefer software development.
What do you find most rewarding about your work at Comalatech?
The teammates. The people I work with every day are fantastic. They’re like a family. I love programming, but when you work with nice people you can go to the office with a smile on your face. That’s priceless. I was also very surprised by the company culture – right away they gave me cool socks and a comic book!
What are your passions outside of work?
Procrastinating! Playing video games. But the thing I love most is mountain climbing. I’ve been doing it for eight years now. There’s good climbing in Bilbao, and when it rains, there’s indoor climbing as well. I hope I’ll be here for a long time!
