In this series we’re spotlighting our team of Comalatechies, the developers, leaders and creatives who build our products and make things happen. We sat down to chat with Andrea Rivera, software developer and fearless globe-trotter.

You’re originally from Chile and now live and work in Bilbao, Spain. How did that come about?

My husband and I were looking for an opportunity to move outside of Chile. Since I was a child, I’ve been interested in travel and learning about different cultures, foods, landscapes and languages, and that’s something we both share. One of our options was to request a country transfer from his company, so we took advantage of it and here we are!

What was your experience moving to a new city and country?

Very good! In Chile I lived in Temuco, a city that is located in the south of the country. There, the weather is very erratic and rains a lot, so in that aspect I feel at home in Bilbao. Also, the local gastronomy is ’oh là là’, exquisite! About Spain in general, I really like the cultural contrast within the country, and the beautiful national parks.

How did you start at Comalatech?

I went to a technology conference (BilboStack) with the developer team of my previous company. One of the booths was from Comalatech, so I took a business card to send them my CV. After investigating on the internet, I was curious about the photos and posts that some of the team members had published. I saw Comalatech as a “relaxed” and fun place to work. Since I was looking for a balance between work and life, I felt that this was the perfect place for me.

After the interviews, it became clear to me that I could grow professionally here. The interviews were also very different from those I had at other companies since I arrived in Spain. I received very quick replies to questions that I asked by email. I felt comfortable, and the people who interviewed me were very kind.

What’s your day-to-day as a software developer?

Well, I decided to work as a full stack, because when I arrived at Comalatech I knew Java, Groovy and Angular. Usually I work with Java in the back end side, and in the front end with React + Redux, and sometimes with Backbone. We have UX meetings to propose technologies/tools that can be useful, share knowledge and give opinions about component design. Also, before starting a new feature, we meet as a team to discuss the best way to develop it.

What excites you about the work you do?

I’m continually learning new things and improving the knowledge that I already have. We have a table where we can add a topic that we are interested in learning, or want to talk about. For example, if I’m interested in how we have implemented AWS architecture on cloud apps, I can add that topic to the table and whoever wants to, can prepare a talk on it. The topics don’t need to be purely technical either. We get to share knowledge, improve our way of expressing ourselves, and build greater self-confidence.

It’s also very satisfying to know that the products we develop are used by important companies like NASA and Nintendo!

What are your passions outside of work?

I love trekking on mountains or national parks and camping. I played violin, but where we live now there isn’t very good sound insulation, so to avoid breaking the ears of the neighbours, I’ve stopped for the moment. I also like to read crime fiction books and comics!
